MP3 Help Page

The following information should answer almost all your questions about our BOOKS ON MP3-CD™ audiobooks. However, if you still have questions or reservations, please contact our Customer Service department.

What does MP3 stand for?

The name MP3 is short for MPEG Audio Layer 3, an international standard for digital audio format. The actual MP3 technology was developed by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany.

How does MP3 technology work?

MP3 is an audio compression format that allows digital files to be compressed to very small size while maintaining their original sound quality. MP3 technology applies to spoken word in the same way it does for music. Thus, we can shrink as much as 22.5 hours of spoken word on to one CD at 128 kbps.

What is an MP3-CD?

An MP3-CD is the latest format that B-O-T is using to distribute our audiobooks. Each BOOKS ON MP3-CD™ audiobook will be delivered in a plastic jewel case with appropriate cover art and a listing of chapters (by track number) on the inside sleeve. Like our CD versions, content on MP3-CDs will be separated into multiple tracks so that you can easily find your place when listening to each title. However, MP3-CDs will use 10 minute tracks instead of 3 minute tracks. This is because of the large amount of information we have to store on each MP3-CD. For you convenience, we have also made sure that each chapter starts at the beginning of a new track.

Where can I play an MP3-CD?

Each BOOKS ON MP3-CD™ audiobook can be played from your computer's CD-ROM drive or from any compatible MP3 device.

To enable your computer to play MP3 files, you will need to make sure you have the appropriate MP3 player software installed. In most cases, you may already have an MP3 player pre-installed on your computer. If not, you can download a free player from the following locations:

MUSICMATCH Jukebox (PC, Mac, or Linux)
Windows Media Player (Pick your operating system)
RealPlayer 8 Basic (PC, Mac, or UNIX)
Winamp Media Player (PC or Mac)

To play MP3 files from an MP3-CD player, just place the CD in to the player and press play - just like a regular CD player!

To play MP3 files from a conventional MP3 player, place the MP3-CD in your computers' CD-ROM drive and then transfer portions of the MP3-CD, using software provided by the MP3 manufacturer, to your MP3 device.

Will I loose my place if I turn off my MP3 player?

Most conventional MP3 and MP3-CD players should bookmark your place even if you turn off your player. In fact, the MP3-CD player that we have tested and recommend, Diamond's Rio Volt, will remember your place in a book if you turn off your player or remove the MP3-CD.

Where can I find a list of available titles?

You can find a list of available titles on our BOOKS ON MP3-CD™ page. We expect to increase our available inventory of BOOKS ON MP3-CD™ as quickly as possible.
