Books by Carrie Ryan

I’m not going to lie, I was a bit of a wuss growing up when it came to scary things such as ghosts, monsters, and creatures (like zombies). I was the kid who kept her toes firmly tucked under the sheets so nothing could get to them at night. So when I was in my second year of law school and my then-new boyfriend (now almost husband) suggested we go to the opening night of a zombie movie, I thought he was nuts. But somehow I let him convince me to go (we went to school in Durham, North Carolina—there wasn’t much else to do). I spent the entire time terrified, clutching his arm (he had bruises), but when the movie was over, I couldn’t stop thinking about it (and even dreaming about it). I wanted to know what it took to survive when the world you knew ended. I wanted to know if I would be able to survive.

I was hooked and my fiancé fed my new addiction for zombies with a healthy diet of movies, books, and graphic novels. But that was all just for fun. I was a “serious lawyer” and when I decided I wanted to write a book, I focused on what I liked to read at the time: romance and chick lit and lighter young adult. Until one day I got stuck trying to come up with a new story idea. My fiancé suggested I write what I love and I joked, “The zombie apocalypse?” He shrugged and smiled.

So that’s what I wrote: the book I wanted to read. I still kept some of the romance (but not romance with zombies), but added in the things that had me so fascinated with all the postapocalyptic and dystopic books and movies I’d been spending so much time thinking about. Admittedly, this means I spend a lot of my day wondering some strange things like how long can a skyscraper stay standing without anyone repairing it? Exactly what are the mechanics of a reanimated dead body? With no infrastructure (roads, cars, communication), how do people get necessary resources?

The rest of my day I spend brokering deals between the two cats and one very large dog who all vie for the spot next to me on the couch while I write (which can become more heated than brokering deals between lawyers) or turning on the fire when the cats demand it in winter. In fact, I think my pets have been quite thrilled with my transition from lawyer to full-time pamperer. They tolerate the writing (though one cat tries to help out by sleeping on my keyboard). And my finance (also a lawyer and a writer) understands when I wander off muttering to myself about zombie hordes (and why we still eat frozen dinners when I’m under deadline).

Though I still make sure the sheet is tucked in every night to keep my toes safe. Just saying, a girl can never be too careful with all the monsters out there in the world.
